No hay un centro, solo dar la vuelta
Museo Experimental El Eco 2024, Mexico City
(Feb 9th-Apr 28th)
“…For Museo Experimental El Eco, Allan’s study reveals his interests in classical visual systems such as the landscape, the horizon or surface luminescence, based on new trompe-l’œil’s created through different layers of materials and frames. A set of “vortexes” are revealed through a sort of coupling to the architecture, modifying the hall’s points of view. The set-up evokes the processes of Lee Krasner, who created new compositions by blocking sections of canvas with remnants of earlier works – a layered allegory of his artistic trajectory. The space also alludes to Gordon Matta Clark’s conical intersections made in abandoned buildings and to the spirals Jungi Ito envisioned for his horror manga Usumaki. In this sense, Allan’s work is consistent with Germán Cueto’s 1953 explorations for the opening of El Eco. The project, called No hay un centro, solo dar la vuelta (There’s No Center, Only Turning Around), constitutes a chromatic and spatial narrative that breaks the axes of the architectural layout and builds a different interior space. It takes advantage of the optical illusion possibilities offered by painting from an environmental perspective specific to the place, revealing certain peculiarities of the pictorial object as an event in the present time, and leveraging the spectator’s senses to culminate the visual thought.”
